Every year, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Services’s Holiday Meals program provides hundreds of disadvantaged families in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area with food and supplies for their own Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

“Food is the issue of the day,” said Kristin Lavergne, community services director for the IFC. “If someone has taken that step to come see us, they are usually really in need.” More »

A corroded pipe that runs from Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers to the sanitary sewer underneath Greensboro Street leaked an as yet undetermined amount of sewage that found its way into storm drains and then to the drainage ditch that runs along Old Pittsboro Road and eventually connects to Morgan Creek. So many younguns! And each with his or her own personality!

That Jon and Kate Gosselin are able to individually identify—not only by physicality but personality traits—each of their 2-year-old sextuplets is perhaps the most amazing discovery in the first episode of a new series, “Jon & Kate plus 8,” produced by Carrboro-based Advanced Medical Productions for the Discovery Health Channel (Channel 35 in Carrboro and Chapel Hill). The series premieres next Tuesday, April 10, at 10 p.m. A sneak preview of that first episode made for compelling viewing. More »

Epitome of Competition

Nov 28, 2007 | Sports | 0 Comments

By Frank Heath

The upcoming contest between UNC and NC State at Finley Stadium is going to be, quite simply, the “epitome of what football is about.” After the Tar Heels found a way to prevail last Saturday against Maryland, the table is immediately set for a brawl between two schools that (a) are close neighbors and hate each other, (b) both cling to post-season aspirations that hinge on winning this game and (c) want badly to establish that their new coach is building the better program. The holiday spirit

Nov 28, 2007 | Opinion | 0 Comments

Chris Fitzsimon

The news is always full of heartwarming stories this time of year, somebody helping a stranger, going the extra mile to help people less fortunate.

Then there’s the North Carolina “Education” Lottery, which teaches us all a much different lesson, even in this holiday season. Lottery revenues continue to fall short of initial projections and nobody still believes the claims by lottery proponents that revenue from state-induced gambling will dramatically improve the funding for public schools. For The Record: A note of thanks

Nov 24, 2007 | For the Record, Opinion | 0 Comments

It was around this time last year that we made a commitment to begin publication of The Carrboro Citizen. And though it took until spring to gear up and actually start printing, this is a good time to thank the many people who have kept us going. More »

No Child Left Behind: Upon closer inspection

Nov 24, 2007 | Education Matters, Opinion | 0 Comments

Steve Peha & Margot Carmichael Lester

No Child Left Behind is up for reauthorization. Those in favor of NCLB say it’s improving public education; those against say it’s ruining public education. Upon closer inspection, neither position seems right. And the fact that we have but two extremes to choose from indicates that we have closed ourselves off to more promising solutions. More »
